Three-Banded Armadillo Explainer
One of the three-banded armadillo’s most remarkable traits is its ability to roll itself into a nearly impenetrable ball. This movement relies on a coordinated interaction between the moveable bands that rotate as the armadillo curls and the head and tail interlocking like puzzle pieces to “seal” the sphere.
Communicating these complex spatial relationships can be challenging with static imagery or conventional video. To make the mechanics easier to understand, the client commissioned an animated explainer video that presents the movement from multiple viewpoints and at a slower pace than would be possible with video footage.
The resulting animation breaks down the rolling motion into its key components, revealing how the armadillo’s unique anatomy works together to create its distinctive defensive posture.

Why 3D?
For this project, 3D animation was the most effective way to communicate the armadillo’s complex spatial relationships. A single model could be viewed and animated from multiple angles, making it possible to clearly show how different anatomical structures interact throughout the rolling motion.

Reconstructing the Anatomy
Building the 3D armadillo required a detailed analysis of its skeleton alongside photographs and video references. I began by sketching how the legs, head, tail, and movable bands fit together, using these studies to develop a working understanding of the anatomy before constructing the model.
The greatest challenge was determining how the legs move beneath the carapace. I was able to observe live three-banded armadillos to better understand these spatial relationships. Combined with a 3D scan of an armadillo skeleton, these observations allowed me to develop an informed reconstruction of the anatomy and create an educated estimate of how the underlying structures move.

Considerations for
Vulnerable Species
Working with vulnerable and threatened species requires careful consideration of how an animal is depicted. While viral imagery of “cute” animals can generate positive attention, it can also increase demand for some species in the illegal pet trade.
For this project, we were therefore intentional about the visual treatment of the armadillo. The final animation avoids emphasizing traits that could encourage perceptions of the animal as cuddly, cute, or anthropomorphic. Instead, the focus remains on its anatomy and remarkable defensive behavior, helping communicate the science without inadvertently encouraging unwanted attention toward a vulnerable species.
