Bird Wing Anatomy for Artists

An educational illustration system designed specifically for artists and creative professionals who want to render more anatomically accurate, life-like birds. Rather than presenting avian anatomy as a purely scientific reference, the project translates the structure and mechanics of the pigeon wing into visual information that is directly useful to artists.

The illustrations explore the relationship between the wing’s skeletal structure, feathers, and external form, helping viewers understand not only what the anatomy looks like, but how it influences the shape and movement of the wing. The visual language combines scientific accuracy with an artistic, hand-drawn aesthetic designed to feel approachable and relevant to a creative audience.

The project was also developed as a flexible collection of digital assets rather than a single static illustration. This allowed the same anatomical elements to be adapted for different formats, including static educational graphics, interactive experiences, and time-based media.

Building a Flexible Asset System

Careful project planning and file organization allowed the individual anatomical elements to function as a reusable asset library. Instead of creating one illustration as a finished, fixed composition, each component was prepared so it could be repositioned, animated, or recombined across different formats.

Each asset is structured to support interactive and time-based applications, making the illustration system adaptable beyond its original format.

Illustrating for the Audience

This project translates the anatomy for an audience without extensive anatomical training. Rather than attempting to communicate every anatomical detail, I focused on the structures most relevant to artists trying to understand and render a convincing bird.

A key part of the process was determining which anatomical relationships were essential to understanding the wing visually: what affects its silhouette and how the underlying structures influence surface form.

The visual style was intentionally artistic and hand-drawn to appeal to artists and provide an example of how the information can be incorporated into their artistic works.

Anatomical Accuracy

I had the opportunity to study a preserved pigeon specimen firsthand, providing an important reference for both the anatomical and morphological details of the project.

Sketching from the specimen became an essential part of the process, helping me investigate the underlying anatomy before constructing the final illustrations. These studies informed the development of the “hero” image and helped ensure that the simplified, artist-focused visuals remained grounded in anatomical reality.
