Carapace Comparative Anatomy

Armadillo and turtle carapaces can appear remarkably similar at a glance. Add inaccurate historical reports and even linguistic similarities between the two, and it’s easy to see why the public often confuses them. In reality, their underlying anatomy reveals two very different evolutionary solutions to the same basic challenge: protecting the body with a shell.

The client wanted a set of visuals that could help clarify these misconceptions when presenting to non-specialist audiences. The illustrations were designed to make the anatomical differences immediately apparent, providing an accessible visual reference that could support talks and discussions about comparative anatomy.

This project uses comparative illustration to make those differences visible to an audience with little anatomical background. Because much of the existing literature emphasizes similarities between the two structures, a key challenge was determining how to present the animals side by side in a way that made their differences immediately apparent.

The illustrations use consistent viewpoints and visual scale to establish a direct comparison, while cross-sectional views reveal the contrasting internal skeletal structures beneath each carapace.

Simplifying Histology

The comparison extends beyond gross anatomy to the microscopic level. Histological images provided detailed information about the tissues making up each carapace, but their complexity made them difficult to understand for a general audience.

I translated these images into simplified, visually appealing schematics that preserved the relevant structures while removing visual information that was not necessary for the intended audience.

Bringing Anatomy to Life

To complement the anatomical diagrams, each animal was illustrated in a series of poses that provide context for how its carapace functions in life. The armadillo is shown in several flexible positions, reflecting the mobility of its carapace and how it accommodates movement. In contrast, the turtle remains relatively static, reinforcing the more rigid structure of its shell.

The living-animal illustrations also provide a visual counterpoint to the more technical skeletal and anatomical diagrams, bringing movement, personality, and ecological context into an otherwise highly scientific comparison.

Designing for Comparison

Because the purpose of the project was to compare two anatomically similar structures, consistency became an important design tool. Matching scale, orientation, viewpoints, and visual treatments allowed the viewer to move between the two subjects without having to mentally reorient themselves.

This consistency reduces the cognitive effort required to make the comparison, leaving the viewer’s attention available for the anatomical differences themselves. The result is a visual system where the design supports the scientific message rather than competing with it.
