The Science of Wrinkled Fingers

A popular-science editorial exploring the physiological mechanisms behind wrinkling fingers after prolonged exposure to water. The project uses a combination of anatomical illustration, microscopic visualization, and a schematic diagram to explain how the nervous and circulatory systems contribute to this familiar phenomenon.

The project was developed from direct anatomical observation during a human hand dissection. I used the anatomical information as the foundation for a narrative designed to answer a simple, relatable question and reveal the science behind an everyday experience.

Dissection Experience

Direct observation during a human hand dissection provided the anatomical foundation for the illustrations. Studying the specimen allowed me to examine the relationships between the bones, vessels, nerves, and surrounding tissues in three dimensions.

These observations informed the construction of the main hand illustration, which combines a lifelike surface transparently revealing the structures beneath the skin. This in vivo approach provides valuable context and approachability for a broad audience.
